Don Cossacks (Russian: ΠΠΎΠ½ΡΠΊΠΈΠ΅ ΠΊΠ°Π·Π°ΠΊΠΈ, romanized: Donskiye kazaki, Ukrainian: ΠΠΎΠ½ΡΡΠΊΡ ΠΊΠΎΠ·Π°ΠΊΠΈ, romanized: Donski kozaky) or Donians (Russian: Π΄ΠΎΠ½ΡΡ, romanized: dontsy, Ukrainian: Π΄ΠΎΠ½ΡΡ, romanized: dontsi), are Cossacks who settled along the middle and lower Don. Historically, they lived within the former Don Cossack Host (Russian: ΠΠΎΠ½ΡΠΊΠΎΠ΅ ΠΊΠ°Π·Π°ΡΡΠ΅ Π²ΠΎΠΉΡΠΊΠΎ, romanized: Donskoe kazache voysko, Ukrainian: ΠΠΎΠ»ΠΎΠ²Π½Π΅ ΠΠΎΠ½ΡΡΠΊΠ΅ Π²ΡΠΉΡΡΠΊΠΎ, romanized: Holovne Dons'ke viis'ko), which was either an independent or an autonomous democratic polity in present-day Southern Russia and parts of the Donbas region of Ukraine, from the end of the 16th century until 1918.
