Don Cossacks (Russian: ДонскиС ΠΊΠ°Π·Π°ΠΊΠΈ, romanized: Donskiye kazaki, Ukrainian: Π”ΠΎΠ½ΡΡŒΠΊΡ– ΠΊΠΎΠ·Π°ΠΊΠΈ, romanized: Donski kozaky) or Donians (Russian: Π΄ΠΎΠ½Ρ†Ρ‹, romanized: dontsy, Ukrainian: Π΄ΠΎΠ½Ρ†Ρ–, romanized: dontsi), are Cossacks who settled along the middle and lower Don. Historically, they lived within the former Don Cossack Host (Russian: ДонскоС ΠΊΠ°Π·Π°Ρ‡ΡŒΠ΅ войско, romanized: Donskoe kazache voysko, Ukrainian: Π“ΠΎΠ»ΠΎΠ²Π½Π΅ Π”ΠΎΠ½ΡΡŒΠΊΠ΅ Π²Ρ–ΠΉΡΡŒΠΊΠΎ, romanized: Holovne Dons'ke viis'ko), which was either an independent or an autonomous democratic polity in present-day Southern Russia and parts of the Donbas region of Ukraine, from the end of the 16th century until 1918.
